Well my little field mowing business is going better then expected this summer. I now have 100 hours on my new engine in the 950. I have changed the oil every 50 hours and did so today as it rolled 100 hours. Question?Theres a oil hole on top of the engine at valve cover and then the side one in the block with the dipstick. When changing the oil should one pour the new oil in the top oil hole or the side one? Or does it really matter. Both times I have just poured it into the side block dipstick hole. Did get the little 950 into some nasty weeds today. Was a foot taller then the stack and roll bar and it bogged some and the governor kicked in and it blew black smoke like an old dump truck and proceeded through the weeds like a champ! I am liking my little 950 more and more as I use it. Its a small powerful little tractor. Anyways if someone can shed some light on why it has 2 oil holes that would be great and thanks!Todd

Todd, I too have a JD950 and I believe the side oil filler was offered for convenience only. If you have a loader and brush guard on your tractor you'll know what I mean, as it is a hassle to open the hood on the tractor. With a side filler you can check and top off your oil without raising the hood altogether. It is a lot easier that way. As far as which is the preferred filling port, me personally, I would opt to use the top port. IMHO, filling from the top coats the engine better and helps combat the "lubrication flow delay" after an oil and filter change on the tractor. Just my 2cents here. Regards Mark ....

Todd, There is really no right or wrong oil fill. These engines are used in other applications where it might not be convenient to reach one or the other oil fills. Just use whichever is more convenient for you. Kenny ....

Todd: I enjoyed your post as I also got my 950 into weeds this morning taller than the stack. I am pulling a 6' rotary cutter and I was a little concerned how it would do. It walked right thru with hardly a strain. Two hawks set up in the trees and made several dives into the freshly mowed area and snatched up mice. Enjoyed watching that. I also fill mine thru the top hole. No particular reason, it just seems more natural. ....
